TIPS & TRICKS: Run “Windows commands” directly from points on the map
Each point on the map has – in addition to XY coordinates and a visual presentation (e.g. red dot) – additional properties. One of these enables the operator to run a “Windows command”, such as opening a PDF document or a website, directly from a point on the map.
On the map you can create separate maps layers, each consisting of one or more points. This way, for example, you can create a map layer which shows the location of AEDs, one with schools, one with fire hydrants, one with video cameras etc.
Each point has a set of properties, which – in addition to latitude and longitude – include a short description of the point (displayed in a pop-up window, when the cursor hovers above the point) and a date range (optional “valid from/to”).
In addition, however, there is a field called “Run program”. Here you can enter the desired Windows command that you want to execute from the point. This way, for example, you can open a file on your computer, on the network or open a website, create an email and much more – directly from the point on the map.
For example, let’s say that a school class is staying overnight at a school and that we have been provided with a PDF document containing information about the accommodation with telephone numbers etc.
If the operator then needs to contact the school class or know more about the event, the operator can quickly open the PDF document directly from the point by pressing Ctrl+right-click and “execute” the Windows command:
… which then opens the PDF file:
Similarly, you could insert a link to the school’s website.
… or a picture of the school …
… or send an email to the school’s principal…
… and much, much more…
For more information about the many possibilities using Windows commands directly from points on the map, see the Administrator Manual under “Editing Points & Map Layers”.
